5. THE SOUNDTRACK: LOVERS ROCK VINYL

Starting with Steve McQueen’s BBC Small Axe Series

Before the needle drops, before the bassline rolls in, before Janet Kay’s falsetto floats through the room—there’s a feeling. A memory. A movement. Steve McQueen’s Lovers Rock, the second film in his Small Axe anthology, isn’t just a cinematic experience—it’s a sonic time capsule. Set in 1980s West London, the film captures the essence of a “blues party,” a DIY dancehall sanctuary born from the London experience, where lovers rock music became both refuge and rebellion.

The soundtrack is the soul of the story.
